During my studio residency at NYU in the summer of 2018, I made a series of white paintings on white Styrene sheets. I would go to the Blick down the street (I lived on Bond St with a welding artist—shout out to the amazing Rebecca Welz, who also teaches at Pratt) and get all shades of white oil paints they have in stock—there are so many! The Styrene sheets were the same ones I worked on during my year at CCA in SF, I had them shipped to me from our beloved Arch Art Supplies in Potrero Hill. The sheets are the whitest of white, almost blue-ish in their coldness, which adds to their industrial character. Even though I used white paint on them, the marks I made with my brush were quite visible, albeit only slightly so, and their appearance was always either heightened or weakened depending on the light. (The paintings were shown as part of my show Fearless Flowers (I Move Through Chicago Like Honey) at White Pearl Gallery in Prague later that year.)
